‘Abd Allah ibn Mu‘awiyah al-Jumahi al-Basri narrated to us: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade passing a sword while it is unsheathed. Abu ‘Isa said: There is a report on this topic from Abu Bakrah. This is a hasan gharib hadith from the narration of Hammad ibn Salamah. Ibn Lahi‘ah narrated this hadith from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, from Bannah al-Juhani, from the Prophet. In my view, the hadith of Hammad ibn Salamah is more authentic.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic verb يُتَعَاطَى refers to passing or handing something from one person to another; the prohibition concerns a sword while unsheathed.
The source gives an alternate route through Bannah al-Juhani and explicitly judges Hammad ibn Salamah’s route more authentic.
Preserve both the alternative chain and Abu ‘Isa’s route preference.
