حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلاَبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي أَسْمَاءَ الرَّحَبِيِّ، عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " إِنَّمَا أَخَافُ عَلَى أُمَّتِي الأَئِمَّةَ الْمُضِلِّينَ " . قَالَ وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " لاَ تَزَالُ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي عَلَى الْحَقِّ ظَاهِرِينَ لاَ يَضُرُّهُمْ مَنْ يَخْذُلُهُمْ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ " . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ . قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ إِسْمَاعِيلَ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْمَدِينِيِّ يَقُولُ وَذَكَرَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم " لاَ تَزَالُ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي ظَاهِرِينَ عَلَى الْحَقِّ " . فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ هُمْ أَهْلُ الْحَدِيثِ .

Qutaybah ibn Sa‘īd narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Abū Qilābah, from Abū Asmā’ al-Raḥabī, from Thawbān, who said that the Messenger of Allah said: “I fear for my community only the leaders who lead people astray.” The Messenger of Allah also said: “A group from my community will continue to stand manifestly upon the truth. Those who abandon them will not harm them, until Allah’s command comes.”
Abū ‘Īsā said: This is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ hadith. I heard Muḥammad ibn Ismā‘īl say that he heard ‘Alī ibn al-Madīnī mention this hadith from the Prophet: “A group from my community will continue to be manifest upon the truth.” ‘Alī said: “They are the people of hadith.”

The English witness includes the two Prophetic statements but omits al-Tirmidhī’s report of Muḥammad ibn Ismā‘īl’s and ‘Alī ibn al-Madīnī’s comments.

The Arabic source records an additional transmission of the second saying and identifies the group, in ‘Alī ibn al-Madīnī’s view, as the people of hadith.
