Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Muḥammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us; Shu‘bah narrated to us, saying: I heard Zayd al-‘Ammī say: I heard Abū al-Ṣiddīq al-Nājī relate from Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī, who said: We feared that something might happen after our Prophet, so we asked the Prophet of Allah. He said: “The Mahdī will emerge among my community and live for five, seven, or nine”—Zayd was unsure. We said, “What does that mean?” He said, “Years.” He said: “A man will come to him and say, ‘O Mahdī, give to me, give to me!’ He will heap into the man’s garment as much as he can carry.”

Abū ‘Īsā said: This is a ḥasan hadith. It has been transmitted through other routes from Abū Sa‘īd, from the Prophet. Abū al-Ṣiddīq al-Nājī’s name is said to be Bakr ibn ‘Amr; it is also said to be Bakr ibn Qays.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The duration is uncertain in the report: Zayd al-‘Ammī hesitates between five, seven, and nine years. The Arabic source identifies Abū al-Ṣiddīq al-Nājī by two reported names.

The English witness omits al-Tirmidhī’s grading and note that the report is transmitted through other routes.

Should a fuller English witness be consulted for these compiler comments?

  • وَأَبُو الصِّدِّيقِ النَّاجِيُّ اسْمُهُ بَكْرُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو وَيُقَالُ بَكْرُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ

The source itself records two possible names for Abū al-Ṣiddīq al-Nājī.

Should both name forms remain listed pending external verification?
