Muḥammad ibn Bashshār and Aḥmad ibn Manī‘ narrated to us; they both said: Rawḥ ibn ‘Ubādah narrated to us; Sa‘īd ibn Abī ‘Arūbah narrated to us, from Abū al-Tayyāḥ, from al-Mughīrah ibn Subay‘, from ‘Amr ibn Ḥurayth, from Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, who said: The Messenger of Allah related to us: “The Dajjāl will emerge from a land in the east called Khurāsān. People whose faces are like hammered shields will follow him.”
Abū ‘Īsā said: Reports on this topic are also related from Abū Hurayrah and ‘Ā’ishah. This is a ḥasan gharīb hadith. ‘Abd Allāh ibn Shawdhab and more than one other transmitter related it from Abū al-Tayyāḥ, but we know it only through the report of Abū al-Tayyāḥ.

As in a related report, the Arabic describes the followers’ faces as shields characterized by al-muṭraqah; “hammered shields” is retained rather than the English witness’s interpretive “shields coated with leather.”
يَتْبَعُهُ أَقْوَامٌ كَأَنَّ وُجُوهَهُمُ الْمَجَانُّ الْمُطْرَقَةُ
Al-muṭraqah describes the shields in a way the English witness interprets as coated with leather; the more literal image is rendered here as “hammered shields.”
Which rendering best conveys this shield description without adding an uncertain material?
