Qutaybah narrated to us; ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, from al-‘Alā’ ibn ‘Abd al-Raḥmān, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah said: “Faith is Yemeni, and disbelief comes from the direction of the East. Tranquillity belongs to the people who tend sheep. Pride and ostentation are found among the loud-voiced people who own horses and the people of tents. When the Messiah—the Dajjāl—comes to the far side of Uḥud, the angels will turn his face toward al-Shām; there he will perish.”
Abū ‘Īsā said: This is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ hadith.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic calls him al-Masīḥ without specifying al-Dajjāl in this passage; he is understood here as the false messiah from the surrounding subject matter.
The words al-faddādīn and ahl al-wabar are difficult social descriptions; the translation is tentative.
The terms al-faddādīn and ahl al-wabar carry specialized social meanings; the English witness gives a different explanatory rendering.
Should these groups be rendered by a more specific livelihood or pastoral description?
