‘Abd ibn Ḥumayd informed us; ‘Abd al-Razzāq informed us; Ma‘mar informed us, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from Ibn ‘Umar, that the Messenger of Allah passed by Ibn Ṣayyād with a group of his Companions, including ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb. Ibn Ṣayyād was a boy playing with other boys by the fort of Banū Maghālah. He did not notice the Prophet until the Messenger of Allah struck him on the back with his hand and said, “Do you testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?” Ibn Ṣayyād looked at him and replied, “I testify that you are the Messenger of the unlettered.” Then Ibn Ṣayyād said to the Prophet, “Do you testify that I am Allah’s messenger?” The Prophet replied, “I believe in Allah and His messengers.” The Prophet asked, “What comes to you?” Ibn Ṣayyād said, “A truthful one and a liar come to me.” The Prophet said, “The matter has been confused for you.”
Then the Messenger of Allah said, “I have concealed something for you,” and he had concealed the verse, “On the day when the sky brings a clear smoke.” Ibn Ṣayyād said, “It is al-dukhkh.” The Messenger of Allah said, “Be gone! You will never exceed your measure.” ‘Umar said, “Messenger of Allah, grant me permission to strike off his head.” The Messenger of Allah said, “If he is indeed the one, you will not be given power over him; and if he is not, there is no good for you in killing him.” ‘Abd al-Razzāq said: He meant the Dajjāl.
Abū ‘Īsā said: This is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ hadith.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source Arabic says that the Messenger of Allah concealed the cited verse from Ibn Ṣayyād. The final comment by ‘Abd al-Razzāq identifies “the one” as the Dajjāl.
