Ahmad ibn Mani‘ narrated to us: al-Nadr ibn Isma‘il, Abu al-Mughirah, narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Suqah, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Dinar, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said: ‘Umar addressed us at al-Jabiyah and said, ‘People, I have stood among you as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) once stood among us, and he said: “I counsel you to honor my Companions, then those who follow them, then those who follow them. After that, lying will become widespread, until a man swears an oath without being asked to swear, and a witness gives testimony without being asked to testify. Beware: no man is alone with a woman but Satan is the third of them. Hold fast to the community and beware division, for Satan is with one person and farther from two. Whoever wants the spacious center of Paradise, let him hold fast to the community. Whoever rejoices in his good deed and is saddened by his bad deed—that is the believer.”’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih gharib hadith through this route. Ibn al-Mubarak narrated it from Muhammad ibn Suqah. This hadith has also been narrated through other routes from ‘Umar, from the Prophet.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The expression بُحْبُوحَةَ الْجَنَّةِ is rendered ‘the spacious center of Paradise.’ The passage about testimony refers to people volunteering oaths or testimony without being called upon.
