Maḥmūd ibn Ghaylān narrated to us; Abū Dāwūd narrated to us; Shu‘bah narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, Ḥammād, and ‘Āṣim ibn Bahdalah, who heard Abū Wā’il, from Ḥudhayfah, who said: ‘Umar said, “Which of you remembers what the Messenger of Allah said about tribulation?” Ḥudhayfah said, “I do.” He said: “A man’s trial lies in his family, wealth, children, and neighbor; prayer, fasting, charity, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong atone for it.”

‘Umar said, “That is not what I am asking you about. I am asking about the tribulation that surges like the waves of the sea.” Ḥudhayfah said, “O Commander of the Faithful, a closed door stands between you and it.” ‘Umar asked, “Will it be opened or broken?” He replied, “It will be broken.” ‘Umar said, “Then it will never be closed until the Day of Resurrection.” Abū Wā’il said: In Ḥammād’s version, I said to Masrūq, “Ask Ḥudhayfah about the door.” He asked him, and Ḥudhayfah said, “It is ‘Umar.” Abū ‘Īsā said: This is a ṣaḥīḥ hadith.
