Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Hārūn ibn Isḥāq al-Hamdānī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhāb narrated to me, from Mis‘ar, from Abū Ḥuṣayn, from al-Sha‘bī, from ‘Āṣim al-‘Adawī, from Ka‘b ibn ‘Ujrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah came out to us while we were nine—five and four, one group being Arabs and the other non-Arabs. He said: “Listen: have you heard that after me there will be rulers? Whoever visits them, affirms their lies, and helps them in their oppression is not of me, nor am I of him; he will not come to me at the Pool. Whoever does not visit them, does not help them in their oppression, and does not affirm their lies is of me, and I am of him; he will come to me at the Pool.”

Abū ‘Īsā said: This is a ṣaḥīḥ gharīb hadith. We know Mis‘ar’s version only through this route. Hārūn said: Muḥammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhāb narrated to me, from Sufyān, from Abū Ḥuṣayn, from al-Sha‘bī, from ‘Āṣim al-‘Adawī, from Ka‘b ibn ‘Ujrah, from the Prophet, a similar report.

Hārūn also said: Muḥammad narrated to me, from Sufyān, from Zubayd, from Ibrāhīm—not al-Nakha‘ī—from Ka‘b ibn ‘Ujrah, from the Prophet, a report similar to Mis‘ar’s. Reports on this topic are also related from Ḥudhayfah.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic says only that the group comprised five and four, and that one of the two groups was Arab and the other non-Arab; it does not specify which number corresponds to which group. The source English assigns five to the Arabs, so that assignment is not adopted.

The Arabic does not say whether the five or the four were Arabs; the English witness assigns five to the Arabs.

Should the group-to-number assignment remain unspecified, as in this translation?

The Arabic preserves additional chains and al-Tirmidhī’s grading, omitted from the English witness.

Should these alternate transmission routes be checked against a fuller witness?
