Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Mūsā ibn ‘Abd al-Raḥmān al-Kindī al-Kūfī narrated to us; Zayd ibn Ḥubāb narrated to us; Mūsā ibn ‘Ubaydah informed me; ‘Abd Allāh ibn Dīnār narrated to me, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said that the Messenger of Allah said: “When my community walks with a proud, swaying gait and is served by the sons of kings—the sons of Persians and Romans—the worst of them will be given authority over the best of them.”

Abū ‘Īsā said: This is a gharīb hadith. Abū Mu‘āwiyah also narrated it from Yaḥyā ibn Sa‘īd al-Anṣārī.

Muḥammad ibn Ismā‘īl al-Wāsiṭī narrated to us this route: Abū Mu‘āwiyah, from Yaḥyā ibn Sa‘īd, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ‘Umar, from the Prophet, a report similar to it. No established basis is known for Abū Mu‘āwiyah’s report from Yaḥyā ibn Sa‘īd, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ‘Umar; the well-known report is only that of Mūsā ibn ‘Ubaydah. Mālik ibn Anas related this hadith from Yaḥyā ibn Sa‘īd as a mursal report, without mentioning ‘Abd Allāh ibn Dīnār or Ibn ‘Umar.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The English witness gives only the wording of the report. The Arabic also compares the transmission routes and identifies Mālik’s route as a mursal report, omitting two transmitters from the chain.

Al-muṭayṭiyā’ describes a proud or ostentatious gait; the precise nuance is uncertain.

Should a more literal or more idiomatic description of this gait be used?

The source states that one chain lacks an established basis and contrasts it with the known route and Mālik’s mursal version.

Should these route distinctions be checked against another edition?
