Qutaybah narrated to us; ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, from al-‘Alā’ ibn ‘Abd al-Raḥmān, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah came upon some people sitting together and said: “Shall I tell you which of you are the best and which are the worst?” They remained silent, so he repeated this three times. A man then said, “Yes, Messenger of Allah. Tell us which of us are the best and worst.” He said: “The best of you is the one from whom good is hoped and whose evil people feel safe from. The worst of you is the one from whom no good is hoped and whose evil people do not feel safe from.”

Abū ‘Īsā said: This is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ hadith.
