Muḥammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us; Abū ‘Āmir al-‘Aqadī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥumayd narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, from the Prophet, who said: “Shall I tell you which of your leaders are the best and which are the worst? The best of your leaders are those whom you love and who love you, for whom you pray and who pray for you. The worst of your leaders are those whom you hate and who hate you, whom you curse and who curse you.”
Abū ‘Īsā said: This is a gharīb hadith; we know it only through the report of Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥumayd. Muḥammad is considered weak because of his memory.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The English witness gives the saying but omits al-Tirmidhī’s note that Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥumayd was considered weak in memory.
وَمُحَمَّدٌ يُضَعَّفُ مِنْ قِبَلِ حِفْظِهِ
The source criticizes the transmitter’s memory, but this note is absent from the English witness.
Should this narrator evaluation be checked against a fuller English witness?
