al-Ḥasan ibn ‘Alī al-Khallāl narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; Hishām ibn Ḥassān informed us, from al-Ḥasan, from Ḍabbah ibn Miḥṣan, from Umm Salamah, from the Prophet, who said: “There will be leaders over you whose actions you recognize and disapprove of. Whoever rejects them is free of blame, and whoever detests them is safe; but whoever approves and follows them...” It was asked, “Messenger of Allah, should we not fight them?” He said, “No, not as long as they perform the prayer.”

Abū ‘Īsā said: This is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ hadith.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic leaves the final clause after “approves and follows them” without stating a consequence; the wording is kept elliptical rather than supplying one.

  • وَلَكِنْ مَنْ رَضِيَ وَتَابَعَ

The Arabic leaves the clause unfinished before the question about fighting the leaders.

Should the unfinished clause remain marked with an ellipsis?
