Aḥmad ibn Sa‘īd al-Ashqar narrated to us; Yūnus ibn Muḥammad and Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us; they both said: Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī narrated to us, from Sa‘īd al-Jurayrī, from Abū ‘Uthmān al-Nahdī, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah said: “When your leaders are the best of you, your wealthy are generous, and your affairs are decided by consultation among you, the surface of the earth is better for you than its depths. But when your leaders are the worst of you, your wealthy are miserly, and your affairs are entrusted to your women, the depths of the earth are better for you than its surface.”
Abū ‘Īsā said: This is a gharīb hadith; we know it only through the report of Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī. Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī has rare reports in his narrations that he relates alone, without corroboration, though he is a righteous man.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source phrase أموركم إلى نسائكم is rendered “your affairs are entrusted to your women”; no additional interpretation is supplied.
The Arabic includes al-Tirmidhī’s grading and comment that Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī’s unusual reports lack corroboration; the English witness omits this.
Should a fuller English witness be consulted for this transmitter note?
