Ahmad ibn Mani‘ narrated to us: Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us: Isma‘il ibn Abi Khalid informed us, from Qays ibn Abi Hazim, from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, that he said: ‘People, you recite this verse: “O you who believe, take care of yourselves. Those who stray will not harm you if you are rightly guided” (Qur’an 5:105). I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, “When people see a wrongdoer and do not restrain him, it is soon that Allah will encompass them all with punishment from Him.”’ Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, from Isma‘il ibn Abi Khalid, something similar. Abu ‘Isa said: There are reports on this topic from ‘A’ishah, Umm Salamah, al-Nu‘man ibn Bashir, ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar, and Hudhayfah. This hadith is sahih. More than one transmitter narrated something like the report of Yazid from Isma‘il; some raised it to the Prophet, while others stopped it at Abu Bakr.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source contains both raised and stopped transmissions of Abu Bakr’s report; this distinction is retained.
نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ يَزِيدَ وَرَفَعَهُ بَعْضُهُمْ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ،
The English witness gives Abu Bakr’s address but omits the source’s note that transmitters differed over whether to raise the report to the Prophet or stop it at Abu Bakr.
Preserve the distinction between marfu‘ and mawquf transmission forms.
