Al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali al-Hulwani narrated to us: ‘Abd Allah ibn Numayr and Waki‘ narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubaydah, from Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, from ‘Ali, who said: While we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), as he scratched the ground, he raised his head toward the sky and said, ‘There is none among you whose place in the Fire and place in Paradise has not been known.’ Waki‘ said, ‘…has not been written.’ They said, ‘Shall we then rely on that, Messenger of Allah?’ He said, ‘No. Act, for each person is facilitated toward that for which he was created.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith.

Waki‘’s wording is explicitly reported as a variant: ‘written’ in place of ‘known.’ The Prophet’s answer rejects passive reliance and commands action.
The Arabic gives the wording ‘known’ and attributes the alternative ‘written’ specifically to Waki‘; the English witness leads with the written wording.
Preserve both readings and attribute the variant to Waki‘.
