Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Quta‘i al-Basri narrated to us: ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Rabi‘ah al-Bunani narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Every newborn is born upon the way of faith, then his parents make him a Jew, a Christian, or one who associates partners with God.’ It was asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, what of one who dies before that?’ He replied, ‘Allah knows best what they would have done.’ Abu Kurayb and al-Husayn ibn Hurayth narrated to us, both saying: Waki‘ narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet, something similar in meaning; he said, ‘born upon the primordial disposition (fitrah).’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. Shu‘bah and others also narrated it from al-A‘mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet, with similar meaning. There is also a report on this topic from al-Aswad ibn Sari‘.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The first wording uses al-millah (‘way/religion’), while the parallel route explicitly says al-fitrah (‘primordial disposition’); the distinction is retained.
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ،
The Arabic first says al-millah and then records the variant al-fitrah; the English witness may normalize both as ‘fitrah.’
Preserve the source’s first wording and mark fitrah as the variant in the second route.
