Hannad narrated to us: Abu Mu‘awiyah narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would often say, ‘O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.’ I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, we believe in you and in what you brought. Do you fear for us?’ He replied, ‘Yes. Hearts are between two of Allah’s fingers; He turns them as He wills.’ Abu ‘Isa said: There are reports on this topic from al-Nawwas ibn Sam‘an, Umm Salamah, ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr, and ‘A’ishah. This is a hasan hadith. More than one transmitter narrated it from al-A‘mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Anas. Some narrated it from al-A‘mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir, from the Prophet. The hadith of Abu Sufyan from Anas is more authentic.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic presents a route variant through Jabir but explicitly judges the Abu Sufyan–Anas route more authentic.

The source includes both the Abu Sufyan–Anas route and a variant through Jabir, then states which route is more authentic.

Preserve the route comparison and Abu ‘Isa’s explicit preference.
