Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.
Al-Hasan ibn ‘Arafah narrated to us; Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Salim, from al-Sha‘bi, from Masruq, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud, who said regarding a grandmother together with her son: ‘She was the first grandmother to whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) allotted one-sixth while her son was alive.’ Abu ‘Isa said: We know this as a raised report only through this route. Some of the Prophet’s Companions gave a grandmother a share when her son was present, while others did not.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The wording ‘her son’ is preserved as in the Arabic. The compiler notes differing practice among the Companions and that the raised report is known only through this route.
The Arabic adds Abu ‘Isa’s route qualification and records disagreement among the Companions about a grandmother inheriting with her son; the witness omits both.
Should this closing compiler note be retained? It is translated from the Arabic.
