Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Bundar narrated to us; Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us; Sufyan informed us, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Harith, from ‘Ali, who said: ‘You recite this verse: “after any bequest made or debt.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled that debts be settled before bequests. Full siblings inherit to the exclusion of paternal half-siblings: a man inherits from his full brother rather than his paternal half-brother.’

Bundar narrated to us; Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us; Zakariyya ibn Abi Za’idah informed us, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Harith, from ‘Ali, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with the same meaning.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The kinship distinction is between full siblings (sharing both parents) and paternal half-siblings (sharing a father). The source states that the debt is settled before carrying out a bequest.

The Arabic contrasts full siblings with paternal half-siblings, whereas the witness wording may be read as children of the same parents versus sons of different mothers.

Should the kinship terms be rendered explicitly as full and paternal half-siblings? This translation follows that distinction.
