Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Two qualities do not come together in a hypocrite: good outward conduct and understanding of the religion.’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This hadith is gharīb. We know it through ‘Awf only from this teacher, Khalaf ibn Ayyub al-‘Amiri. I have not seen anyone narrate from him except Abu Kurayb Muhammad ibn al-‘Ala’, and I do not know what his standing is.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source explicitly notes that the sole known transmitter from Khalaf is Abu Kurayb and that Abu ‘Isa does not know Khalaf’s reliability; this uncertainty is retained.
