Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from ‘Aqqar ibn al-Mughirah ibn Shu‘bah, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Whoever seeks cauterization or ruqyah has disavowed reliance upon Allah.’ Abu ‘Isa said: There are reports on this topic from Ibn Mas‘ud, Ibn ‘Abbas, and ‘Imran ibn Husayn. Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • Ruqyah is retained as the term for a spoken supplication or incantation used for treatment. The wording of the report is translated as given, without adding a legal or medical interpretation.

Ruqyah is a religiously specific term; the source uses the term without further definition here.

Is retaining ruqyah with a concise explanatory gloss suitable?
