Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Ibn Abi ‘Umar narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, from ‘Urwah—Abu Hatim ibn ‘Amir—from ‘Ubayd ibn Rifa‘ah al-Zuraqi: Asma’ bint ‘Umays said, ‘Messenger of Allah, the children of Ja‘far are quickly affected by the evil eye. May I perform ruqyah for them?’ He said, ‘Yes. If anything could outstrip the decree, the evil eye would outstrip it.’ Abu ‘Isa said: There are reports on this topic from ‘Imran ibn Husayn and Buraydah. This is a hasan sahih hadith.

This report was also narrated from Ayyub, from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, from ‘Urwah ibn ‘Amir, from ‘Ubayd ibn Rifa‘ah, from Asma’ bint ‘Umays, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali al-Khallal narrated this to us; he said: ‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, from Ma‘mar, from Ayyub, with this chain.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The block records differing forms of ‘Urwah’s name in the routes: ‘Urwah (identified as Abu Hatim ibn ‘Amir) and ‘Urwah ibn ‘Amir. The phrase about the evil eye outstripping the decree is conditional; it does not state that anything actually does so.

  • عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ،

The source records ‘Urwah in one route with the identification Abu Hatim ibn ‘Amir and another route as ‘Urwah ibn ‘Amir.’

Should both chain forms be retained? Both are translated as transmitted.
