Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Razzaq and Ya‘la narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Mansur, from al-Minhal ibn ‘Amr, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge for al-Hasan and al-Husayn, saying, ‘I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every venomous creature, and from every harmful eye.’ He also used to say, ‘In this way Ibrahim used to seek refuge for Ishaq and Isma‘il, peace be upon them.’
Al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali al-Khallal narrated to us; Yazid ibn Harun and ‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Mansur, with a similar report in meaning. Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The supplication is addressed to two people; ‘you both’ preserves the dual form. The source includes a second chain and a compiler grading omitted by the English witness.
وَيَقُولُ " هَكَذَا كَانَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ يُعَوِّذُ إِسْحَاقَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلاَمُ " .
The source adds a second chain and Abu ‘Isa’s grading, which are absent from the English witness.
Should this additional chain and grading be included? They are retained from the Arabic.
