Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn Khirash al-Baghdadi narrated to us; Ahmad ibn Ishaq al-Hadrami narrated to us; Wuhayb narrated to us, from Ibn Tawus, from his father, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘If anything could outstrip the decree, the evil eye would outstrip it. And when you are asked to wash, then wash.’ Abu ‘Isa said: There is also a report on this topic from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr. This is a hasan sahih gharib hadith. The hadith of Hayyah ibn Habis is gharib. Shayban narrated from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Hayyah ibn Habis, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). ‘Ali ibn al-Mubarak and Harb ibn Shaddad do not mention Abu Hurayrah in its chain.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic leaves the object of ‘wash’ implicit; the translation does not add an object. The final note contrasts the route through Abu Hurayrah with the versions of ‘Ali ibn al-Mubarak and Harb ibn Shaddad.
The Arabic says ‘when you are asked to wash’ without explicitly naming the object in this passage.
Should the object remain implicit as in the source? The translation leaves it unstated.
