Hannad narrated to us; Abu Mu‘awiyah narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Ja‘far ibn Iyas, from Abu Nadr, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us on a military expedition. We stopped among a people and asked them for hospitality, but they did not host us. Their chief was then stung by a scorpion, and they came to us, asking, ‘Is there anyone among you who can perform ruqyah for a scorpion sting?’ I said, ‘Yes, I can, but I will not perform ruqyah for him until you give us sheep.’ They said, ‘We will give you thirty sheep.’ We accepted. I recited “Praise belongs to Allah” (al-Fatihah) over him seven times, and he recovered. We took the sheep. Then we felt some concern about them and said, ‘Do not be hasty until you go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).’

When we came to him, I told him what I had done. He said, ‘How did you know it was ruqyah? Take the sheep, and set aside a share for me with you.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. Abu Nadr’s name was al-Mundhir ibn Malik ibn Qut‘ah. Al-Shafi‘i allowed a Qur’an teacher to take payment for teaching the Qur’an and considered it permissible to stipulate that payment; he cited this hadith as evidence. Shu‘bah, Abu ‘Awanah, and others narrated this hadith from Abu Bishr, from Abu al-Mutawakkil, from Abu Sa‘id, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
