Abu Musa Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Samad ibn ‘Abd al-Warith narrated to us; Shu‘bah narrated to us; Abu Bishr narrated to us; he said: I heard Abu al-Mutawakkil relate from Abu Sa‘id that some Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by an Arab settlement. Its people neither offered them food nor hosted them. Their chief fell ill, so they came to us and asked, ‘Do you have any medicine?’ We replied, ‘Yes, but since you neither fed us nor hosted us, we will do nothing until you give us compensation.’ They agreed to give them a flock of sheep. One of our men began reciting the Opening of the Book (al-Fatihah) over the chief, and he recovered. When we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we told him, and he said, ‘How did you know it was ruqyah?’ He did not mention any prohibition, and he said, ‘Eat, and set aside a share for me with you.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a sahih hadith, and it is more accurate than the hadith of al-A‘mash from Ja‘far ibn Iyas. More than one transmitter related this hadith from Abu Bishr—Ja‘far ibn Abi Wahshiyyah—from Abu al-Mutawakkil, from Abu Sa‘id. Ja‘far ibn Iyas is Ja‘far ibn Abi Wahshiyyah.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic describes a flock of sheep without stating a number. The group’s initial refusal and the Prophet’s response that he mentioned no prohibition are preserved. The compiler’s preference for this route and identification of Ja‘far ibn Iyas are included.

The Arabic continues with a grading, preference between routes, fuller transmitter attribution, and identification of Ja‘far ibn Iyas, all absent from the English witness.

Should the compiler’s notes and the full alternate transmitter form be retained? They are included here.
