Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Ibn Abi ‘Umar narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Khuzamah, from his father, who said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), ‘What do you say about ruqyahs we perform, medicines we use for treatment, and precautions we take for protection? Do these avert anything from Allah’s decree?’ He said, ‘They are part of Allah’s decree.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith.

Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Ibn Abi Khuzamah, from his father, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with a similar report. This is a hasan sahih hadith. Both narrations were transmitted from Ibn ‘Uyaynah. Some transmitters say ‘from Abu Khuzamah, from his father’; some say ‘from Ibn Abi Khuzamah, from his father’; and some say ‘from Abu Khuzamah.’ Transmitters other than Ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated it from al-Zuhri, from Abu Khuzamah, from his father, and this is more accurate. We know no other hadith from Abu Khuzamah from his father.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source explicitly treats ruqyah, remedies, and protective measures as part of divine decree, not as things outside it. The compiler preserves several variants in the transmitter’s name and chain and prefers the route through Abu Khuzamah.

  • عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ،

The source gives multiple forms of the chain through Abu Khuzamah and Ibn Abi Khuzamah and identifies one as more accurate.

Should all the chain variants and the compiler’s preference be preserved? They are included here.
