Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Muhammad ibn Maddawiyah narrated to us; ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from his brother ‘Isa. He said: I visited ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ukaim Abu Ma‘bad al-Juhani while he had a reddish skin condition. We said, ‘Why do you not hang something (as an amulet)?’ He replied, ‘Death is closer than that.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Whoever hangs something is entrusted to it.’ Abu ‘Isa said: We know the hadith of ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ukaim only through Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla. ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ukaim did not hear directly from the Prophet; he lived in the Prophet’s time and would say, ‘The Messenger of Allah wrote to us.’

Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us; Yahya ibn Sa‘id narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Layla, with a similar report in meaning. Abu ‘Isa said: There is also a report on this topic from ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The phrase ‘hang something’ is left general, as in the Arabic. The compiler explicitly notes that ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ukaim did not hear directly from the Prophet, despite living in his time.

  • ‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَحَدِيثُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُكَيْمٍ إِنَّمَا نَعْرِفُهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ‏.

The compiler states that ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ukaim did not hear from the Prophet, and quotes him as saying the Messenger wrote to them.
