Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us; Abu ‘Amir al-‘Aqadi narrated to us; Ibrahim ibn Isma‘il ibn Abi Habibah narrated to us, from Dawud ibn Husayn, from ‘Ikrimah, from Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach them, for fever and every kind of pain, to say: ‘In the name of Allah, the Great; I seek refuge in Allah, the Almighty, from the harm of every throbbing vein and from the harm of the Fire’s heat.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a gharib hadith; we know it only from the narration of Ibrahim ibn Isma‘il ibn Abi Habibah, who is considered weak in hadith. Another wording is transmitted: ‘a throbbing vein’ (with a variant vocalization).

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The supplication is given in translation rather than transliteration. The Arabic notes a variant reading for the phrase describing the vein.

  • ‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبَةَ ‏.

The Arabic includes Abu ‘Isa’s grading, the narrator’s weakness, and a variant wording after the supplication; the English witness omits these notes.

Should the compiler’s grading and variant be preserved? They are included from the source.
