Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

‘Isa ibn Ahmad narrated to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to us; Malik narrated to me, from Abu al-Aswad Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Nawfal, from ‘Urwah, from ‘A’ishah, from Judamah bint Wahb al-Asadiyyah, who heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘I nearly forbade ghaylah until I was reminded that the Romans and Persians do that and it does not harm their children.’ Malik said: Ghaylah is when a man is intimate with his wife while she is nursing. ‘Isa ibn Ahmad said: Ishaq ibn ‘Isa narrated to us; Malik narrated to me, from Abu al-Aswad, with a similar report. Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan gharib sahih hadith.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • Ghaylah is explained in the source as intercourse with a wife during nursing. The translation retains the explanation attributed to Malik.

  • ‏ قَالَ مَالِكٌ وَالْغِيلَةُ أَنْ يَمَسَّ الرَّجُلُ امْرَأَتَهُ وَهِيَ تُرْضِعُ ‏.

The source includes Malik’s definition, another chain, and Abu ‘Isa’s grading; the English witness omits these details.

Should these source details remain in the translation? They are included from the Arabic.
