Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Hamid ibn Ja‘far narrated to me; ‘Utbah ibn ‘Abd Allah narrated to me, from Asma’ bint ‘Umays: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked her, ‘What do you use to induce a bowel movement?’ She said, ‘Shubrum.’ He said, ‘It is hot and forceful.’ She said: Then I used senna to induce a bowel movement. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘If anything could contain a cure for death, it would be senna.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan gharib hadith; that is, a remedy for facilitating bowel movements.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The compiler explains the meaning of the term for laxative use. The discussion of these substances is translated as a historical report, not as medical advice.

  • ‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ ‏.

The Arabic adds Abu ‘Isa’s grading and explains the intended meaning of the remedy term; the English witness omits these details.

Should the compiler’s explanation be included? It is translated from the source.
