Ibn ‘Abbas reported that a man asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, which deed is most beloved to Allah?’ He replied, ‘The one who completes a journey and then sets out again.’ The man asked, ‘What is the one who completes and sets out again?’ He said, ‘The one who recites the Qur’an from its beginning to its end; whenever he completes it, he begins again.’ Abu ‘Isa said this is a gharib hadith, known from Ibn ‘Abbas only through this route, and its chain is not strong. Muhammad ibn Bashshar also transmitted a similar report through Muslim ibn Ibrahim, from Salih al-Murri, from Qatadah, from Zurarah ibn Awfa, from the Prophet, omitting Ibn ‘Abbas. Abu ‘Isa considered this version more accurate than the one through Nasr ibn ‘Ali and al-Haytham ibn al-Rabi‘.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The idiom al-hall al-murtahil refers to someone who completes reciting the Qur’an and immediately starts again, not someone who completes it while traveling. Abu ‘Isa says the route attributed to Ibn ‘Abbas is weak and that the mursal version from Zurarah ibn Awfa is more accurate.
