Safwan ibn ‘Assal reported: A Jew said to his companion, ‘Let us go to this Prophet.’ His companion replied, ‘Do not call him a prophet; if he hears you, he will have four eyes.’ They came to Allah’s Messenger and asked him about nine clear signs. He said: ‘Do not associate anything with Allah; do not steal; do not commit adultery; do not take a life Allah has made sacred, except with just cause; do not take an innocent person to a ruler so that he will kill him; do not practice magic; do not consume usury; do not falsely accuse a chaste woman; do not turn your backs on the day of battle; and, specifically for you Jews, do not transgress regarding the Sabbath.’ They kissed his hand and foot and said, ‘We bear witness that you are a prophet.’ He asked, ‘What prevents you from following me?’ They replied, ‘David prayed to his Lord that prophethood would never cease among his descendants. We fear that if we follow you, the Jews will kill us.’
There are reports on this topic from Yazid ibn al-Aswad, Ibn ‘Umar, and Ka‘b ibn Malik. Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith.

The Arabic says the companion feared the Prophet would have ‘four eyes’ if he heard the Jew call him a prophet; the English witness paraphrases this as being pleased. The command is not to bring an innocent person before an authority for execution; the witness mistranslates this clause. The ten prohibitions comprise nine general commands plus a Sabbath instruction addressed specifically to the Jews.
