حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ وَكِيعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْكَلْبِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " اتَّقُوا الْحَدِيثَ عَنِّي إِلاَّ مَا عَلِمْتُمْ فَمَنْ كَذَبَ عَلَىَّ مُتَعَمِّدًا فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ وَمَنْ قَالَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ بِرَأْيِهِ فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ " . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ .

Ibn ‘Abbas reported that the Prophet said, ‘Be careful when narrating from me; narrate only what you know. Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire. And whoever speaks about the Qur’an based on his own opinion, let him take his seat in the Fire.’ Abu ‘Isa graded this hadith hasan.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic says ‘except what you know’ (illa ma ‘alimtum); the English witness renders this ‘except what I taught you.’ The second warning specifically concerns speaking about the Qur’an on the basis of personal opinion (bi-ra’yihi).
