Ibn ‘Abbas reported: ‘When the Prophet was driven out of Makkah, Abu Bakr said, “They have driven out their Prophet; they are surely doomed.” Then Allah revealed: “Permission to fight is granted to those who are fought, because they have been wronged; and Allah is surely able to grant them victory” (Qur’an 22:39). Abu Bakr said, “I knew then that fighting would take place.”’
Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan report. ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi and others transmitted it from Sufyan, from al-A‘mash, from Muslim al-Batin, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, as a mursal report without Ibn ‘Abbas in the chain.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The report connects the first permission to fight with the Prophet’s expulsion from Makkah; the compiler notes a route omitting Ibn ‘Abbas.
