Sa‘id ibn Jubayr reported: ‘When the Prophet was driven out of Makkah, a man said, “They have driven out their Prophet.” Then these verses were revealed: “Permission to fight is granted to those who are fought, because they have been wronged; and Allah is surely able to grant them victory—those who were driven from their homes without right” (Qur’an 22:39–40). They were the Prophet and his Companions.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
This version says only ‘a man’ made the statement, unlike the preceding report, which names Abu Bakr.
