حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُصَلِّي عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ تَطَوُّعًا حَيْثُمَا تَوَجَّهَتْ بِهِ وَهُوَ جَاءٍ مِنْ مَكَّةَ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ : (وَلِلَّهِ الْمَشْرِقُ وَالْمَغْرِبُ ) الآيَةَ . قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ فَفِي هَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ . وَيُرْوَى عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ فِي هَذِهِ الآيَةِِ : ()ولله الْمَشْرِقُ وَالْمَغْرِبُ فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّوا فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ ) قَالَ قَتَادَةُ هِيَ مَنْسُوخَةٌ نَسَخَهَا قَوْلُهُ : (فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ ) أَىْ تِلْقَاءَهُ . حَدَّثَنَا بِذَلِكَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي الشَّوَارِبِ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ . وَيُرْوَى عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، فِي هَذِهِ الآيَةِ : (أَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّوا فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ ) قَالَ فَثَمَّ قِبْلَةُ اللَّهِ . حَدَّثَنَا بِذَلِكَ أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ عَرَبِيٍّ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ بِهَذَا .

Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Prophet would pray voluntary prayers while riding his mount, facing whichever direction it turned as he traveled from Makkah to Madinah. Ibn ‘Umar then recited, ‘To Allah belong the east and the west’ (Qur’an 2:115), and said, ‘It was concerning this that the verse was revealed.’ Abu ‘Isa graded this hadith hasan sahih. It is reported that Qatadah said this verse was abrogated by Allah’s command, ‘So turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque’ (Qur’an 2:144), meaning toward it. Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Abi al-Shawarib transmitted this from Yazid ibn Zuray‘, from Sa‘id, from Qatadah. Mujahid explained ‘Wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah’ as ‘There is Allah’s direction.’ Abu Kurayb Muhammad ibn al-‘Ala’ transmitted this from Waki‘, from al-Nadr ibn ‘Arabi, from Mujahid.’

Ibn ‘Umar applies Qur’an 2:115 to voluntary prayer while traveling on a mount, which may face in any direction. Abu ‘Isa also records a separate interpretation from Qatadah that the verse was abrogated by the later command to face the Sacred Mosque, and Mujahid’s explanation of ‘the Face of Allah’ as Allah’s direction/qiblah.
