حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ، وَعَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، - الْمَعْنَى وَاحِدٌ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ يَحْيَى، قَالَ عَبْدٌ هُوَ ابْنُ عَبَّادٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ مَرِضَ أَبُو طَالِبٍ فَجَاءَتْهُ قُرَيْشٌ وَجَاءَهُ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَعِنْدَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ مَجْلِسُ رَجُلٍ فَقَامَ أَبُو جَهْلٍ كَىْ يَمْنَعَهُ وَشَكَوْهُ إِلَى أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَقَالَ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي مَا تُرِيدُ مِنْ قَوْمِكَ قَالَ " إِنِّي أُرِيدُ مِنْهُمْ كَلِمَةً وَاحِدَةً تَدِينُ لَهُمْ بِهَا الْعَرَبُ وَتُؤَدِّي إِلَيْهِمُ الْعَجَمُ الْجِزْيَةَ " . قَالَ كَلِمَةً وَاحِدَةً قَالَ " كَلِمَةً وَاحِدَةً " . قَالَ " يَا عَمِّ قُولُوا لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ " . فَقَالُوا: إِلَهًا وَاحِدًا؟ ( ما سَمِعْنَا بِهَذَا فِي الْمِلَّةِ الآخِرَةِ إِنْ هَذَا إِلاَّ اخْتِلاَقٌ ) قَالَ فَنَزَلَ فِيهِمُ الْقُرْآنُ : (ص* وَالْقُرْآنِ ذِي الذِّكْرِ * بَلِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فِي عِزَّةٍ وَشِقَاقٍ ) إِلَى قَوْلِهِ : (ما سَمِعْنَا بِهَذَا فِي الْمِلَّةِ الآخِرَةِ إِنْ هَذَا إِلاَّ اخْتِلاَقٌ ) . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ . وَرَوَى يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، نَحْوَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ وَقَالَ يَحْيَى بْنُ عُمَارَةَ حَدَّثَنَا بُنْدَارٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، نَحْوَهُ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، .

Ibn ‘Abbas said: Abu Talib fell ill, and Quraysh came to visit him. The Prophet also came. A group of men were sitting with Abu Talib, and Abu Jahl stood up to keep the Prophet away. They complained about him to Abu Talib, who said, ‘Son of my brother, what do you want from your people?’ He replied, ‘I want them to accept one word, by which the Arabs will follow them and the non-Arabs will pay them the jizyah.’ Abu Talib said, ‘One word?’ He answered, ‘One word.’ Then he said, ‘Uncle, say: There is no god but Allah.’ They said, ‘One god? We have not heard of this in the latter religion. This is nothing but a fabrication.’ The Qur’an was revealed concerning them: ‘Sad. By the Qur’an containing the Reminder. But those who disbelieve are in arrogance and opposition …’ up to ‘We have not heard of this in the latter religion. This is nothing but a fabrication’ (Qur’an 38:1–7). Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. Yahya ibn Sa‘id also narrated a similar report from Sufyan, from al-A‘mash. Yahya ibn ‘Umarah said: Bundar related to us, from Yahya ibn Sa‘id, from Sufyan, a similar report from al-A‘mash.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
Preserved the exchange about one word and the Quraysh’s response, and retained Abu ‘Isa’s additional chain notes. The passage is cited only through the stated endpoint in Qur’an 38:7.
