Abu Hurayrah reported: ‘When the verse “Whoever does evil will be requited for it” (Qur’an 4:123) was revealed, it troubled the Muslims, and they complained about it to the Prophet. He said, “Aim for what is near and right, and every affliction that befalls a believer is an expiation—even a thorn that pricks him or a hardship that strikes him.”’ Abu ‘Isa graded this hadith hasan gharib and identified Ibn Muhaysin as ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhaysin.
