Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet said: ‘Spoils of war had not been made lawful to any black-haired people before you; a fire would descend from heaven and consume them.’ Sulayman al-A‘mash remarked, ‘Who would say this today other than Abu Hurayrah?’ At Badr, the Muslims took spoils before they had been made lawful for them, and Allah revealed: “Had it not been for a prior decree from Allah, a great punishment would have touched you for what you took” (Qur’an 8:68). Abu ‘Isa graded this hadith hasan sahih gharib through al-A‘mash.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The expression ‘black-haired people’ refers to human beings; the report contrasts earlier communities with the permission granted to this community after Badr.
