Anas reported: ‘When the Prophet arrived in Madinah, the Muhajirun came to him and said, “Messenger of Allah, we have never seen people more generous when they have much, or more gracious in sharing what little they have, than the people among whom we have settled. They have taken care of our needs and shared their produce with us so generously that we fear they will take all the reward.” The Prophet said, “No—as long as you pray to Allah for them and commend them.”’ Abu Isa graded this hadith sahih hasan gharib through this chain.

The final phrase literally speaks of praying to Allah for the Ansar and praising or commending them. The English witness interprets it as showing gratitude to them; ‘commend them’ retains the broader sense.
