Translation
Narrated Ibn 'Umar

that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) made bonds of brotherhood among his Companions. So 'Ali came crying saying: "O Messenger of Allah! You have made a bond of brotherhood among your Companions, but you have not made a bond of brotherhood with me and anyone." So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to him: "I am your brother, in this life and the next."

Hadith Commentary from Jami' at-Tirmidhi

This narration from Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3720 demonstrates the special relationship between the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his cousin and son-in-law Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him).

Context of Brotherhood

The Prophet established bonds of brotherhood (mu'akhah) between the Muhajireen and Ansar to strengthen communal ties and mutual support. This practice created spiritual and social bonds that transcended tribal affiliations.

Ali's Concern

Ali's distress stemmed from his deep desire for closeness to the Prophet. His emotional appeal reflects his exceptional love and attachment to Allah's Messenger, fearing exclusion from this blessed institution.

Prophetic Response

The Prophet's declaration "I am your brother, in this life and the next" elevates their relationship beyond the temporal bonds established with others. This encompasses both worldly companionship and eternal spiritual brotherhood in the hereafter.

Scholarly Insights

Classical scholars note this hadith establishes Ali's unique status. While others received brotherhood with fellow companions, Ali received the ultimate honor of being declared the Prophet's own brother in both worlds, indicating his distinguished position among the Sahaba.
