‘Ali ibn al-Mundhir al-Kufi narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from al-Ajlah, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, who said: On the day of Ta’if, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called ‘Ali aside to speak privately. The people said, ‘His private conversation with his cousin has gone on a long time.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘I did not take him aside; rather, Allah took him aside.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan gharib hadith. We know it only through al-Ajlah, though others besides Ibn Fudayl also narrated it from al-Ajlah. The meaning of ‘rather, Allah took him aside’ is that Allah commanded me to speak privately with him.
