Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated this hadith from al-Zuhri, from ‘Urwah, from ‘A’ishah, adding: ‘Did you see how Mujazziz passed by Zayd ibn Harithah and Usamah ibn Zayd while their heads were covered and their feet were visible? He said, “These feet are of one lineage.”’ Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman and others also narrated this hadith from Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah, from al-Zuhri, from ‘Urwah, from ‘A’ishah. This is a hasan sahih hadith. Some scholars used this hadith as evidence for accepting the judgment of a qā’if, an expert who identifies lineage from physical resemblance.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source gives the additional detail that the men’s heads were covered and their feet exposed, and says some scholars cited it in support of qiyafah, identification of lineage by physical traits.

The source gives the head-covering detail; the English witness has it as well. The key legal context is the compiler’s note about qiyafah.

Should qā’if be retained with an explanation of the practice? It is explained in the translation.
