Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Muhammad ibn Ubayd al-Muharibi narrated to us: Abd al-Aziz ibn Abi Hazim narrated to us, from Musa ibn Uqbah, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar: The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) had a gold ring made and wore it on his right hand. Then he sat on the pulpit and said: ‘I used to wear this ring on my right hand.’ Then he cast it away, and the people cast their rings away.

There are also reports on this subject from Ali, Jabir, Abdullah ibn Ja‘far, Ibn Abbas, Aishah, and Anas. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Ibn Umar is hasan sahih. This hadith has also been narrated in a similar way from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, through routes other than this one, but those versions do not mention that he wore the ring on his right hand.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The English witness begins at Ibn Umar and omits the preceding chain (Muhammad ibn Ubayd al-Muharibi, Abd al-Aziz ibn Abi Hazim, Musa ibn Uqbah, and Nafi). The Arabic specifies that the ring was first worn on the right hand, then cast away, after which people cast away their own rings.

The English witness omits four transmitters preceding Ibn Umar in the Arabic chain.

Can the English witness’s abbreviated isnad be confirmed as an intentional editorial choice?
