Ahmad ibn Mani narrated to us: Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, from Hammad ibn Salamah, who said: I saw Ibn Abi Rafi wearing a ring on his right hand, so I asked him about it. He said: I saw Abdullah ibn Ja‘far wearing a ring on his right hand. Abdullah ibn Ja‘far said: The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to wear a ring on his right hand.

He said: Muhammad ibn Ismail said: This is the soundest report narrated on this subject.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The English witness begins at Hammad ibn Salamah and omits Ahmad ibn Mani and Yazid ibn Harun from the Arabic chain. It also adds an identification of Ibn Abi Rafi (including his name, status as a freedman, and the name Aslam) that is not present in this Arabic passage; that material is not included in the translation.

  • حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ،

The English witness omits Ahmad ibn Mani and Yazid ibn Harun from the Arabic chain.

Can the abbreviated chain be confirmed as an intentional editorial choice?

  • قَالَ رَأَيْتُ ابْنَ أَبِي رَافِعٍ يَتَخَتَّمُ فِي يَمِينِهِ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ،

This identification and biographical detail do not occur in the supplied Arabic passage.

Is the English bracketed identification sourced from external material not included in this Arabic text?
