Al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Khallal narrated to us: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ma‘mar informed us, from Thabit, from Anas ibn Malik, that the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) had a ring made of silver and engraved on it: ‘Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah.’ Then he said: ‘Do not engrave on it.’
Abu Isa said: This hadith is sahih hasan. The meaning of his statement, ‘Do not engrave on it,’ is that he forbade anyone to engrave ‘Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah’ on their own ring.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The English witness begins at Anas ibn Malik and omits the preceding chain (al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Khallal, Abd al-Razzaq, Ma‘mar, and Thabit). The Arabic explicitly explains the prohibition as forbidding anyone to engrave the phrase ‘Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah’ on their own ring.
The English witness omits four transmitters preceding Anas in the Arabic chain.
Can the English witness’s abbreviated isnad be confirmed as an intentional editorial choice?
