Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Muhammad ibn Humayd narrated to us: Abu Dawud—al-Tayalisi—narrated to us, from Abbad ibn Mansur, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: ‘Use ithmid kohl, for it clears the eyesight and causes hair to grow.’ It was claimed that the Prophet had a kohl case that he used every night, applying it three times to this eye and three times to this one.

It has also been narrated through other routes from the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) that he said: ‘Use ithmid, for it clears the eyesight and causes hair to grow.’ There are also reports on this subject from Jabir and Ibn Umar.

Abu Isa said: The hadith of Ibn Abbas is hasan. We know it in this wording only through the report of Abbad ibn Mansur.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The English witness begins at Ibn Abbas and omits the Arabic chain (Muhammad ibn Humayd, Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, Abbad ibn Mansur, and Ikrimah). It also reduces the additional report through other routes to ‘Another chain with similar meaning’ without translating its separate wording, ‘Use ithmid.’

  • The English witness grades the report hasan gharib and names ‘Abbas bin Mansur’; the Arabic gives hasan and names Abbad ibn Mansur. ‘Gharib’ is absent from the Arabic grading here.

  • The Arabic says the dye clears vision and causes hair to grow, without specifying eyelashes. Ithmid is retained as the named kohl substance. The transmitter’s claim about the Prophet’s nightly use is kept as a separate statement.

The English witness omits four transmitters preceding Ibn Abbas in the Arabic chain.

Can the English witness’s abbreviated isnad be confirmed as an intentional editorial choice?

The Arabic supplies a second report and its wording (‘Use ithmid…’); the English witness replaces this with a short summary and omits the actual report.

Was the second wording intentionally omitted from the English translation?

The English witness says Abbas, but the Arabic says Abbad ibn Mansur

Is ‘Abbas’ a transcription error in the English witness?

The Arabic grades this report hasan and does not include gharib.

Was ‘gharib’ added to the English witness from another source or report?
