Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Qutaybah narrated to us: Ya‘qub ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Iskandarani narrated to us, from Suhayl ibn Abi Salih, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade two modes of dress: as-samma’, and for a man to sit with his legs drawn up, wrapped in his garment, with nothing covering his private parts.

Abu Isa said: Reports on this subject are also related from Ali, Ibn Umar, Aishah, Abu Sa‘id, Jabir, and Abu Umamah. The hadith of Abu Hurayrah is hasan sahih gharib through this route, and it has been narrated through other routes from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace).

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The English witness begins at Abu Hurayrah and omits the preceding chain (Qutaybah, Ya‘qub ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Iskandarani, Suhayl ibn Abi Salih, and his father). The term as-samma’ is retained because this passage names the clothing style but does not explain it.

  • The second prohibited posture describes a man sitting with his legs drawn up, enclosed in his garment, with no covering over his private parts.

  • حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ،

The English witness omits four transmitters preceding Abu Hurayrah in the Arabic chain.

Can the English witness’s abbreviated isnad be confirmed as an intentional editorial choice?

As-samma’ is a named mode of dress; this Arabic passage does not define the term, so it remains transliterated.

What precise garment arrangement does as-samma’ denote here?
